Sex-Limited Genes, Sex-Influenced Genes & Sex-Linked Inheritance
These are types of inheritance in which the expression of traits is affected by the sex of the individual. Let’s understand each in detail.
1️⃣ Sex-Limited Genes
Sex-limited genes are present in both males and females, but they are expressed only in one sex. Their expression is influenced by sex hormones (like testosterone or estrogen).
2️⃣ Sex-Influenced Genes
These genes are present in both sexes and can be expressed in both, but the **dominance of the allele is influenced by the sex** of the individual.
- In males: baldness allele is dominant
- In females: baldness allele is recessive
3️⃣ Sex-Linked Inheritance
Sex-linked genes are located on the sex chromosomes (X or Y). Most sex-linked traits are X-linked because the X chromosome is larger and carries more genes.
📌 Characteristics of X-linked Inheritance:
- More common in males (only one X chromosome)
- Males are hemizygous (have only one copy of X-linked gene)
- Fathers cannot pass X-linked traits to sons
🔬 Example 1: Eye Colour in Drosophila (Fruit Fly)
Discovered by Thomas Hunt Morgan. The gene for eye color is located on the X chromosome.
- Female (XX) needs two recessive alleles for white eyes
- Male (XY) needs only one recessive allele for white eyes
- Cross between red-eyed female and white-eyed male shows sex-linked inheritance
🔬 Example 2: Hemophilia in Humans
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder where blood doesn’t clot properly. It is caused by a recessive gene located on the X chromosome.
- XH = Normal
- Xh = Hemophilia gene
Inheritance:
- Female carrier: XHXh
- Male patient: XhY
- Female patients are rare (need two recessive alleles)
📊 Summary Table
| Type | Gene Location | Expression | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sex-Limited | Autosomes | Only in one sex | Milk production, Beard growth |
| Sex-Influenced | Autosomes | Different dominance in sexes | Pattern baldness |
| Sex-Linked | Sex chromosomes (mostly X) | Mostly in males | Hemophilia, Color blindness, Eye color in Drosophila |
📚 Conclusion
Understanding sex-limited, sex-influenced, and sex-linked traits is essential in genetics as they explain why certain diseases or physical characteristics appear more commonly in one sex than the other. These patterns of inheritance provide insight into how genes behave in the presence of sex chromosomes and hormones.
